The layout of FOCUS 2 is designed to walk you through the first steps of your career planning process. Most students start at the top of the home page and work their way down, but you may want to visit some of the “Recommended Tools and Websites” at any stage in your process.

My Career Planning Readiness/ My Academic Strengths: Assists you in organizing your thoughts and career/educational goals.

Self-Assessment: Helps you assess your values, interests, skills, and preferences related to career/educational planning.

Explore the Possibilities: Aids you in generating options regarding programs of study, degree pathways, and occupations. You can explore options by FGCU major, occupation title, job family, or area of study. Use this information and the information from your assessments/ readiness activities to help you narrow these options down to your top choices. Once narrowed, you may want to rank these options to decide on your top choice.

Take Action: Begin organizing your educational and professional development activities in preparation for resume creation, graduate school applications, and/or job search activities.

Education and Planning Results: Review saved occupations and majors and use the "My Portfolio" feature to synthesize and print results information.

Recommended Tools & Websites: Additional resources through the FGCU Career Development Services office that can assist you in your career development and planning processes.

This resource was created by the University of Tennessee to help college students connect majors to careers. It is not inclusive of solely FGCU majors, and students will find some slight variation in the names of majors. This resource provides information on career areas/industries, occupational research, professional associations, employer research, and more.

MyFloridaFuture is a college and career planning tool dedicated to providing students and parents with a wealth of information to help make better-informed decisions about educational options in the State University System of Florida. This interactive site will allow you to explore data at the System level and by individual institutions, including information on salary, graduate employment, student debt, and additional educational opportunities.

• Career Exploration Process: Many students struggle with trying to determine where or how to start the career/major exploration process. This diagram shows a pathway that starts by first understanding yourself (your interests, values, personality, etc), gathering occupational information, and using self-reflection and informational interviewing to determine whether your selected goal(s) or major would be a good fit.
• Discover Your Holland Code (Explore Career Interests): In this activity, you are asked to read six descriptions and then select the top three (in order) that you feel best describe yourself. Using the following two pages, you can explore how self-assessed interest types correlate to FGCU majors. This guide is meant to be a starting point toward discovering potential majors suited toward similar interests and is not intended to assign a major for you.
• Major Options by MBTI (Explore Your Personality Type): In this activity, you compare statements located across from one another (enjoy meeting new people vs prefers a night in with close friends) and select the one you feel best describes yourself. Then, determine which set of 5 responses have the most checkmarks, and circle the corresponding letter. Write out your personality code (e.g. INTJ) at the bottom. You are then able to explore major options that may support specific personality characteristics. This activity is meant to be a starting point toward discovering potential majors suited toward personality types and is not intended to assign a major for you.
• Determine Your Work Values: Read each description and choose your top 6 work values. You can then use Occupational Research Resources located in the next tab below to see if your desired job supports your work values. You may also print this out and bring it in to discuss with a Career Advisor.
• Informational Interviewing: Discover what a particular field is "really like" by meeting with a professional to learn about their job, company, educational background, and insights they can provide about how you might pursue a similar position. 

Occupational Outlook Handbook

The U.S. Department of Labor and the Bureau of Labor Statistics compiles comprehensive information on jobs and occupations across various industries. This resource can provide insight on types of degrees required for specific jobs, the salary range, working environments, and includes statistics for employment growth and employment by location.

If you're looking for a way to explore career options based on your skills, Holland Code, or work values, this resource is for you! Learn about career options by industry clusters, or explore green careers and those designated as having a bright outlook! O*Net is a fantastic resource for veterans and allows you to use your military classification code to explore civilian jobs.

Dive in to your career exploration and discover your future by using keywords, browsing careers by industry or taking a quick assessment. MyNextMove provides you insight into specific jobs and can connect you to graduate schools and job boards for that specific occupation!

Candid Career

Candid Career has thousands of informational interviews from real professionals in many different industries. Get advice from someone in your dream job or explore careers you didn't even know existed! Candid Career also has "Get Hired" videos with advice on many areas of job searching.
