Program Accreditation

The M.S. in Athletic Training Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (2201 Double Creek Drive, Suite 5006, Round Rock, Texas 78664; telephone number 512-733-9700). (http://www.caate.net)

The M.S. in Athletic Training Program at Florida Gulf Coast University has received accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education through the 2021-2022 Academic Year.

Getting Started

Applicants must submit an application online per the individual program’s instructions below. Please contact Graduate Admissions at 239-745-GRAD or graduate@fgcu.edu for additional information about the application process. Satisfaction of minimum University and program requirements does not guarantee admission to a graduate program. Applicants should check with the program for the most up to date admission requirements prior to commencing the application process.

Application Process (a two-part process):

Part One-

• All applicants must apply and be admitted by FGCU’s Graduate Admissions Office. Satisfaction of minimum University and program requirements does not guarantee admission to the M.S.A.T. graduate program.
  • Please see the above paragraph “Getting Started” for more information on how to apply to FGCU’s Graduate Admissions Office.

Part Two-

• All applicants must also apply to the M.S.A.T. Program through the Athletic Training Centralized Application Service (ATCAS). Be sure to complete all aspects of the ATCAS application.

Applications to both FGCU’s M.S.A.T. Program and FGCU’s Graduate Admissions Office must be submitted by February 1^st. ATCAS forwards only completed and verified applications to the M.S.A.T. Program. A complete and verified ATCAS application contains all required information, including your graduate school application, transcripts, and letters of recommendation.

Program Admission Requirements

Students are admitted to the Master of Science Athletic Training Program in the summer of each year. For priority consideration, all application materials must be received by Feb 1st. Application materials received after Feb 1st will be considered on a space available basis. All applications to the Master of Science Athletic Training Program must be submitted through the Athletic Training Centralized Application Service (http://atcas.liaisoncas.org/).

The Department of Rehabilitation Sciences conducts a competitive admissions process. The following are the minimum requirements for admission to the entry-level athletic training program. (Please note that meeting the minimum requirements for admission does not guarantee admission to the Master of Science Athletic Training Program.) All applicants must have:

1. A baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university. Applicants may complete a baccalaureate degree in any field. The following undergraduate majors at FGCU may be the most congruent with the required athletic training prerequisite courses: BS in Exercise Science; BS in Health Science.
2. Achieved a GPA calculated for all prerequisite courses (for courses completed at the time of application) of at least 3.00 (on a 0 to 4 scale).
3. Achieved a GPA for all upper division coursework (for courses completed at the time of application) of at least 3.00 (on a 0 to 4 scale).
4. Submitted all program specific application materials using ATCAS (http://atcas.liaisoncas.org/).
5. Completed the following prerequisite courses or the equivalent with a grade of C or better (a grade of C- or less is not acceptable). 

1. BSC 2010C General Biology I w/Lab (4)
2. BSC 1085C Anatomy & Physiology I w/Lab (4) or BSC 2011C General Biology II w/Lab (4)
3. BSC 1086C Anatomy & Physiology II w/Lab (4) or PCB 2XXX Human Physiology (3)
4. PHY 2053C College Physics I w/Lab (4)
5. PSY 2012 General Psychology (3)
6. CHM 1045C General Chemistry w/Lab I (4)

The Department of Rehabilitation Sciences/Athletic Training Program has a mandatory orientation that occurs usually the two days prior to the start of the entering semester for classes. Information is sent out with acceptance letters. Students that do not attend the mandatory orientation will not be accepted into the program.

Criminal Background Check

All students admitted to the M.S.A.T. Program must complete a criminal background check. A student may encounter potential problems with clinical education placement and/or licensure as an athletic trainer if he or she has a criminal record. For specific information, contact the Board of Certification for the Athletic Trainer. If a student has a criminal record, it is the responsibility of the student to inquire with the Board of Certification for the Athletic Trainer as to whether a criminal record may limit the student's ability to obtain licensure as an athletic trainer or practice in certain settings.

Admissions Decision Appeals

A student may appeal admissions decisions by contacting the Office of the Dean in The Marieb College of Health & Human Services at 239-590-7451. Through the Dean's Office, the student brings an appeal to the MCHHS Student Appeals Committee. If the student is not satisfied with the outcome of this process, he or she may bring the appeal to the University Ombudsman (www.fgcu.edu/ombudsman).

Search for official course descriptions by using the Course Description Search utility.

Go to the Course Descriptions Search Web page, then follow these steps:

1. Select an Academic Year from the TERM dropdown (required)
2. Select a course prefix from one of the SUBJECT dropdowns (required)
3. Enter search words in the TEXT field (optional, but will narrow the search results)
4. Press Search

Getting started with the Course Schedule Search

Search for program courses by using the Course Schedule Search utility.

Go to the Course Schedule Search Web page, then follow these steps:

1. Select an Academic Year from the TERM dropdown (required)
2. Select one or more of the search options to narrow your results (for example, CAMPUS, COLLEGE, DEPARTMENT, LEVEL, PREFIX*, COURSE ATTRIBUTE**). For virtual or web courses, select VIRTUAL in the CAMPUS field.
3. Press Search.

*A course prefix is a three-letter designator for a major division of an academic discipline (for example, ACG for Accounting , BSC for Biological Science, ENC for English Composition). See the Degree Requirements page for a list of courses (with prefix and number) that can be used to fulfill degree requirements.

**A course attribute identifies specific characteristics of courses that can be used in a Degree Evaluation to satisfy a degree requirement. (Course attribute examples are Humanities courses - GEHM and Social Science courses - GESO.)

Athletic Training Program Mission Statement

The mission of the Athletic Training Program is to promote expertise in human movement, exercise, and wellness across the lifespan.  The faculty foster the development of self directed, life-long learners through an applied scientific basis of practice, community involvement, an integrated curriculum, and interdisciplinary opportunities. 

Program Objectives

The objectives of the Athletic Training Education Program flow directly from the philosophy, purpose and mission of the Department of Physical Therapy and Human Performance and are congruent with the University’s and the College of Health Professions’ Mission and Goals.

We, as program faculty, strive to:

• Prepare graduates for contemporary athletic training practice
• Maximize student learning styles and the unique interests, background and talents of each student
• Foster an environment that promotes creativity, scholarship, and respect for diversity and caring for one another

ATHLETIC TRAINING EDUCATION STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:

The Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP) will produce graduates who:

Outcome I:      Demonstrate proper injury/illness prevention, clinical evaluation and diagnosis required of an athletic trainer

Outcome II:    Demonstrate proper immediate, emergency care, treatment and rehabilitation required of an athletic trainer

Outcome III:   Identify important concepts related to administration used in professional athletic training practice.

Outcome IV:   Model professional behaviors that are consistent with professional practice in athletic training

Outcome V:    Demonstrate effective critical thinking and problem solving skills compatible with being an effective athletic trainer

The Athletic Training Program has a variety of clinical education sites for the ATS to complete his or her clinical education. FGCU has affiliations with intercollegiate athletics, local high schools, professional sports, outpatient rehabilitation settings, and with other college athletic programs.

The AT Program works with several facilities outside the State of Florida. Individual sites may have requirements and/or resources for students placed at clinical facilities in those states. Links are provided below for requirements and/or resources by individual states outside of Florida.

Florida Gulf Coast University's M.S.A.T. program is not responsible for student housing, transportation, or any other living expenses while the student is at their clinical site. It is the sole responsibility of the student to cover all expenses while at an out-of-state clinical site.
