Recently, Chelsea Lyles was named the second head coach in FGCU’s women's basketball program history. But did you know Coach Lyles began her journey at FGCU as a student-athlete? Read more to learn what she likes about coaching a team she once played for and if she believes she can shoot more 3-pointers than Azul in one minute.
What’s your vision for the women’s basketball program? My vision is to have a similar style and team that we've always had. I've been a part of this program for 16 years, and I don't plan on changing much.
What do you like most about coaching a team you once played on? I like that it's something I've helped build. I've invested a lot of my life here. I'm really passionate about this university and program.

What initially attracted you to FGCU as a student-athlete? I wanted to go to a university where I could get a good education and play for an elite coach and program. My JUCO (junior college) coach told me how good of a Coach (Karl) Smesko was. I knew nothing about the school or program. When Coach Smesko was recruiting me, the program was in its first year in Division 1, no one really knew about it, but I just knew it was the place for me.
How do you see the women’s basketball program contributing to the overall campus culture? Our team has some great personalities. Other people like to be around them. They are a great example of what a group of people from all different backgrounds can accomplish.
What’s your favorite game day tradition? Listening to gospel music in the car while getting a shaken espresso from Starbucks on my way to the arena.
How do you spend your spare time? Well, since I've been named head coach, I don't really have much spare time anymore. But I really enjoy working out, spending time with my dog and watching sports.
It’s time for an office potluck. What do you bring? Something vegan.
If you had the opportunity to visit a foreign country, where would you go and what would you do? My favorite country to visit is Spain. The food, beauty and culture of that place is amazing. I've been to both Madrid and Barcelona. Highly recommend both.
What’s your go-to hype song to get pumped up before a game, and why? Usually something by Beyonce, Kirk Franklin, Hezekiah Walker or Fred Hammond. Really anything that lifts my mood.
Who can shoot the most three-pointers in one minute; You or Azul? Me!
