Threats and Hazards

Threats and Hazards

FGCU plays a large role in the Southwest Florida region, and interruptions to activities that are in line with our mission could have significant impacts on the university itself and our surrounding communities. It is critical that we identify potential threats and hazards in order to better prepare, respond to, and recover from them. These threats and hazards could be both natural, technological, or man-made. The information and resources in these sections are intended to inform the University community of some threats and hazards we are exposed to, based on our geographic location and infrastructure.

Natural Hazards

FGCU experiences a subtropical climate, with pleasantly warm winters and hot, humid summers during which there are frequent thunderstorms. Using data from the National Risk Index, an online tool through FEMA that quantifies a community’s risk from natural hazards, the University faces risk from the following natural hazards:.

Useful Resources

National Weather Service Logo The National Weather Service has an interactive weather and hazards data viewer that displays active watches, warnings, and advisories across the country, including Lee County.
Weatherstem Logo

FGCU is able to track dangerous conditions as they're unfolding using technology through the Lee County Weatherstem community. The site is able to provide current weather conditions, including temperature, wind speed, and lightning activity, among other weather data.

Technological Hazards

Cyber Attacks

FGCU Information Technology Services (ITS) manage risk by identifying, evaluating, controlling, and mitigating vulnerabilities that are a potential threat to the data and information systems under its control. However, the University community also plays an integral role in ensuring our data and technology infrastructure remains safe. Below are some helpful tips; be sure to explore the ITS site for more in-depth knowledge on how you can do your part.

  • Protect your passwords and utilize 2-factor authentication when possible
  • Be aware of phishing tactics and attempts
  • Report any issues to the University Help Desk
  • Explore the ITS Knowledge Base
  • Review the FGCU Technology Use Policy

Other Technological Hazards

Many technological hazards often come with little or no warning. Examples include airplane crashes, hazardous material releases, power failures, and train derailments. While the campus may not host assets that may cause some of the hazards mentioned, we are in proximity to assets in our community that would affect our campus.

  • Be Alert: Pay attention to your surroundings
  • Stay Informed: Have multiple ways to receive emergency alerts and timely notifications
  • Establish Emergency Contacts: Ensure everyone in your household or workplace knows how to reach each other during emergencies
