TITLE:  Biochemistry of tropical diseases - Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL)

Project Description:

COIL activities were developed and implemented to teach about the biochemistry of tropical diseases. The activities were implemented in a biochemistry survey course to demonstrate applications of biochemistry concepts to human health. The partner institution provided expertise in tropical diseases and provided virtual lectures to introduce the subject area. Students between FGCU and the partner institution formed teams to learn about the molecular foundations of selected tropical diseases, the molecular foundations for the development of therapeutic interventions, and approaches for the detection of diseases. The student teams shared their new knowledge with the rest of the class in the form of poster presentations. Activity types included Virtual Guest Speaker and Student-to-Student Dialogue.

Resulting Scholarship:

This project led to an ongoing collaboration creating opportunities for undergraduate research.

Student Learning Outcomes:

Expected learning outcomes of the COIL activities include:

  • Learning about biochemical foundations of selected tropical diseases.
  • Familiarizing with applications of biochemistry concepts to tackle and diagnose diseases, such as protein-ligand and protein-protein interactions, post-translational modifications, and immunological detection.

Practicing science communication skills by communicating directly with international students and creating a poster presentation to be shared within the class.
