CSA (Campus Security Authority)

At Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU), maintaining a safe and secure campus environment is one of our highest priorities. Campus Security Authorities are a vital part of our institutional effort in working together for safe campuses. Campus Security Authorities are defined by the Clery Act and designated by FGCU.

Your responsibilities as a Campus Security Authority will be well-defined through annual training and provided resources. These responsibilities include reporting certain crimes identified by the Clery Act that are reported to you which occurred on or around FGCU campuses and properties. A helpful formula to keep in mind is a Clery Crime + Clery Geography = a reportable Clery Crime Statistic.

There are four categories of CSAs, as defined by the Clery Act:

  • A campus police department or a campus security department of an institution.
  • Any individual or individuals who have responsibility for campus security but who do not constitute a campus police department or a campus security department (e.g., an individual who is responsible for monitoring the entrance into institutional property).
  • Any individual or organization specified in an institution’s statement of campus security policy as an individual or organization to which students and employees should report criminal offenses.
  • An official of an institution who has significant responsibility for student and campus activities, including, but not limited to, student housing, student discipline and campus judicial proceedings. An official is defined as any person who has the authority and the duty to take action or respond to particular issues on behalf of the institution.

All FGCU CSAs are notified of their designation upon assuming their role which makes them a CSA, and on an annual basis thereafter. FGCU CSAs are required to participate in training on an annual basis – all communication and reminders of the training will be sent to CSAs from the Clery Act Compliance Officer.

Your responsibility as a Campus Security Authority is well-defined. It is your responsibility to report certain crimes identified by the Clery Act that are reported to you or your department and occurred on or around FGCU campuses and properties. Again, an easy formula to keep in mind is a Clery Crime + Clery Geography = a reportable Clery Crime Statistic. This reporting form is only for Campus Security Authorities for Clery Purposes, this is not to report a crime that occurs on campus. UPD no longer utilizes online reporting, please contact 239-590-1900 to report a crime that occurs on campus or on university property.
