Take a break and walk it out
Are you looking for ways to become active, enjoy the cooler weather and boost your energy during the workweek? Join FGCU’s Exercise is Medicine on Campus program and students from the exercise science program for weekly walks on campus.
Exercise science students lead guided group walks throughout campus. The walks take place from noon to 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays and from 11 a.m. to noon Wednesdays. Participants will meet at the Veterans Pavilion at the Library Lawn for warm-ups before the walks begin. Short and long walk options are available.
This offering began during the 2015-16 academic year through the Exercise is Medicine on Campus program by Dr. Renee Heil, past exercise science faculty member. Since then, walking days have been offered on and off, in collaboration with the exercise science program, University Recreation & Wellness and Human Resources.
This year, the walks serve as part of the physical activity promotion project for exercise science students to encourage better health and support walking and taking activity breaks with faculty and staff.
What are some of the benefits of going on walks?
- Improving your heart health
- Boost your mood
- Pain management
- Bone and muscle health
- Opportunity to make new friends
According to Dr. Patti Bauer, Exercise is Medicine on Campus committee advisor and assistant professor in the exercise science program, students who chose to participate in this project want to make a difference on campus and support employees who are seeking to stay active. It is also an opportunity for students to talk with employees and learn from the population of people they want to serve and advocate for.
