Honors College Probation Policy (Effective Fall 2024)

The Honors College at FGCU expects all members of our community to uphold and support high academic and ethical standards. Students falling short of those standards will be placed on probation in order to communicate the importance of our expectations and to provide a period of time for students to correct problems. This policy describes what actions result in probation, the terms of probation, and ways a probationary period can end.

Students admitted to the Honors College may be placed on probation for:

Students must maintain a minimum 3.50 cumulative institutional GPA to remain in good standing with the Honors College. Students falling below this minimum GPA will be placed on probation at the start of the next full academic term (Fall or Spring).
- Students will have two full academic semesters to bring their cumulative institutional GPA back to a 3.50 or above, not counting summer terms.
- Students unable to bring their GPA to a minimum 3.50 average will be dismissed from the Honors College at the conclusion of the second semester.
Mandatory Activities

Students not attending or completing any mandatory activities (such as the Honors College Kickoff, First Year Sequence, and the Mentor Program) will be placed on probation immediately.
- The probation period will last for the duration of the semester that the violation occurred, and probation will be lifted at the start of the following semester.
- In outstanding circumstances, a student may gain an exemption from a required activity. This exemption should be obtained from the Honors College in writing in advance of the activity, except in cases of medical emergencies.

- All students are notified in writing by the Honors College at the time of being placed on probation, given the requirements to remove probation status, and the duration of their probation.
- At the conclusion of the probation period, students who have not satisfied the terms of their probation will be removed from the active roster of Honors College students.
- Students placed on probation are not eligible to apply for Honors Development Funds, or hold a leadership position within the Honors College.
- The Honors College will notify in writing students who satisfy the terms of their probation when their probation has concluded.
- A student cannot complete an Honors College curriculum while on probation. Only students who have completed all curriculum requirements at the time of graduating from the university are considered Honors College graduates.
- Students currently on probation who earn a separate probation will be removed immediately from the Honors College.
- Pursuant to the Honors College’s Community Standards statement (below) certain legal violations may result in immediate expulsion from the Honors College.

Honors College Community Standards

Honors College students are expected to uphold higher academic and behavioral standards both within Florida Gulf Coast University’s boundaries and as a representative of the University outside of campus. These standards include the following:

Students must maintain and uphold University-wide conduct policies.
Students placed on probation within their respective academic college will also be placed on Honors Probation.
Students reprimanded for unprofessional behavior within their academic program or University-sponsored extracurricular activities will also be reprimanded by the Honors College.
Students are expected to uphold academic standards set by both the University and the Honors College. (Refer to Student Code of Conduct.)
Legal incidents brought to the attention of the University and/or the Honors College may result in either probation or expulsion from the Honors College, which will be determined at the discretion of the Honors College Office.
Students found in violation of the Honors Community Standards will be reprimanded accordingly by the Honors College Office, with potential outcomes including probation or expulsion from the Honors College.
