Javon Daniels was among those fortunate enough to be a recipient of a scholarship by Donna and John Schubert, philanthropists who focus their giving on students who don’t qualify for needs-based awards or those who are the highest achievers.
“My dream was to be the first person in my family to graduate college with a bachelor’s degree,” he said. “This scholarship was the only way I would be able to complete that dream. It will change my life.”
Scholarships allowed him to get involved in activities beyond the classroom, which enriched his college experience.
“I have done volunteer work with an organization called Pick Up the Ball. It is for young men to gain leadership skills and responsibility in their community,” he said. “I also do a little volunteer work with the Harry Chapin Food Bank and did some community service at the Boys and Girls Club of America in Bonita Springs.
“I’m now helping Dwayne Jackson with his Hoops on a Mission organization.”
The Schuberts are as happy with how Javon’s college experience turned out as he is.
“At first, he was a question mark, but he really matured and turned into an impressive young man,” Donna Schubert said. “I just got a text message from his mother. She was very appreciative and complimentary. These things make you say wow. Not only are we happy but their parents are, too.”
