TOEFL Prep
FGCU’s TOEFL Prep courses are designed to help students with an advanced knowledge
of English reach their TOEFL score goals for college entrance and professional certification.
Students will practice each section of the internet-based TOEFL test (TOEFL iBT):
Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking. Advanced grammar, test-taking strategies,
and vocabulary building are integrated throughout all 4 course areas of study. There
are a total of 4 meetings per course, and all courses are offered in a FLEX format.
The cost for each course is $500 and does not include the textbook.

TOEFL Prep 1: Reading
Toggle More InfoStudents will learn to navigate, skim, and scan the reading section of the TOEFL iBt
test by studying 8 question types. Reading skills and vocabulary building exercises
are included in the coursework and will be practiced in and out of class. Timing strategies
will be applied to practices. As this is an accelerated college preparatory course,
students are expected to attend each class online or face-to face and do 6 hours per
week of homework.

TOEFL Prep 2: Listening
Toggle More InfoStudents will learn to listen actively by studying and practicing all 6 skills in
the Listening section of the TOEFL iBt test. Course content includes strategies for
maintaining focus, identifying details, and taking rigorous notes. Timing strategies
will be applied to practices. As this is an accelerated college preparatory course,
students are expected to attend each class online or face-to face and do 6 hours per
week of homework.

TOEFL Prep 3: Writing
Toggle More InfoStudents will learn to compose and paraphrase for the writing section of the TOEFL
iBt test by studying question types and response expectations in the Independent and
Integrated Writing tasks. Punctuation rules and vocabulary for writing are included
in the course content. Timing strategies and TOEFL rubrics will be applied to practices.
As this is an accelerated college preparatory course, students are expected to attend
each class online or face-to face and do 6 hours per week of homework.

TOEFL Prep 4: Speaking
Toggle More InfoStudents will learn to formulate spoken responses to 6 tasks and 6 question types
through a variety of timed practices. Rhetorically appropriate responses and pronunciation
strategies will be applied to the Independent and Integrated Speaking tasks. Timing
strategies and TOEFL rubrics will also be applied to practices. As this is an accelerated
college preparatory course, students are expected to attend each class online or face-to
face and do 6 hours per week of homework.
